About the Vilano Beach, Florida Area There is a significant difference between living in Vilano Beach vs. Ponte Vedra Beach and St Augustine Beach areas. The beaches themselves are different in color and texture, form and function. I'll speak about the north shore first. I'll call the dividing line for the beaches, the inlet of the ocean to the Matanzas River into the St. Augustine Harbor. The sand on the northern shores from Porpoise Point, Vilano Beach to Ponte Vedra Beach tends to be softer, with more shells, grainer, and more beige in color than white sugary sand you may see on St Augustine Beach or Jacksonville Beach (sugary mostly because of prior dredging and beach renourishments). I call this northern beach a contemplative beach. It's perfect for hunting sea shells, including conch shells after a good storm, sharks teeth (mostly baby teeth) and other gems that can be found along the shore on a nice long walk. Along the northern coast line there tends to be more hatchlings of sea turtles than further south. The Turtle Patrol is kept busy in these parts. Pelicans fly in formation and sandpipers scatter across the waters edge with urgent anticipation. The beach is not very wide but more undulating along the coastline. Sometimes at high tide the beach is very narrow. Fishermen have a marvelous time with their on-shore catch and can often be seen waiting out their day along the ocean edge. Driving on the Vilano beach is limited to a very small area - the tip of the penninsula around Porpoise Point and just parts of Vilano Beach and that is all. No more driving on the beach is allowed or accessible except for emergency vehicles from this point as far north that I know of through Jacksonville Beach and up to Atlantic Beach in Jacksonville. I prefer these beaches because the only people on them are mostly local people who live in the immediate area. There is not a lot of public parking at Seaside Park or near Villages of Vilano until you get to the Guana State Park,North, Middle and South parking or the Mickler Road public parking. At the end of each road that intersects with Coastal Highway, the road technically extends to the ocean. You will find hidden pathways for public access to the beach. Some pathways are deeded beach accesses for some subdivisions along the highway. But all of the beaches are public. And that's part of the beauty of owning a home in this area. Nestled between the intracoastal waterway and the ocean no matter where you are living it's a short walk in either direction. There are a number of boat ramps along the way too for those who prefer to go boating with ease. There are fewer "gated" communities along the north shore and more communities that are not "deed restricted" adding to the "beachy lifestyle" of old. Let me show you more about this area with great restaurants, great surfing, fishing, boating, and nice friendly neighborhoods. | | | | Contemplative Beach | |
